A life in colour, sound and character.
Kristian Marr is a British painter, musician and actor based in Barcelona. His paintings are populated by musicians, unruly faces and strange characters: figures that seem to have arrived halfway through a story. Bold colour draws you in; humour, tension and small oddities give you reasons to stay.
His creative life has taken him through London’s music scene, recording studios and European cinema. In Camden, he formed a close friendship with Amy Winehouse, with whom he recorded his song So Strange. Released in 2020, the recording preserves a spontaneous moment between friends: Amy visiting the studio and joining him at the microphone.
On screen, Kristian played the lead role of Lenz in Philippe Grandrieux’s Malgré la nuit (Despite the Night), alongside Ariane Labed and Roxane Mesquida. He also appeared in Confession of a Child of the Century, featuring Pete Doherty and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Painting has its own place in this story. In a 2020 interview, Kristian described his Barcelona studio and the influence of the city’s sunlight on his painting and songwriting. That appetite for colour is unmistakable in his canvases: hot reds, deep blues, brilliant yellows and faces that refuse to disappear quietly into the background.
Working primarily in acrylic, with selected pieces incorporating oil, wax crayon or ceramic, he moves between expressive heads, angular musicians and spare, graphic scenes. Some paintings are mischievous; others feel more restless. Each leaves room for the viewer to imagine what happened before and what might happen next.
Original paintings and selected fine art prints are available directly from Kristian. He also welcomes commissions, creating individual works for particular spaces, people and occasions.
